How To Make old fashioned apple pie simply recipes

My mother (my kids called her Ghee) was a "from scratch baker". To save time, I use a frozen pie crust. This was one of her favourite pies to prepare for all of us.

Living in North Georgia, we are only an hour from the best apple orchards around. We used to go pick our own apples and by nightfall, we would have a wonderful aroma calling us back to the kitchen for apple pie and ice cream.

My mother passed away over 7 years ago but when I prepare this recipe, I am transported back to her kitchen with her love surrounding us.

Ingredients For Ghee's Old-Fashioned Apple Pie

  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 lb gala apples
  • 1/2 c plain flour
  • 1/2 c light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 deep dish pie crust, baked (to save time, use frozen pie crust)
  • 1/2 c walnuts, chopped
  • 4 Tbsp melted margarine
  • 1 egg, white only
  • 1/4 c sugar

Instructions for Apple Pie Recipe

Prick the bottom and sides of the crust with a fork. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden. Immediately brush the bottom and sides of the hot crust with a light coating of egg white. Reset oven to 425 degrees.

While crust is baking, mix pecans, flour, and brown sugar in a bowl. Work in butter with fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sugar, corn starch, and cinnamon. Toss in apples and lemon juice. Cover with waxed paper and microwave on high for 12 minutes, stirring halfway through.

Spoon filling into crust. Sprinkle pecan topping over the filling. Bake pie for 10 to 12 minutes or until topping is golden. Cool on wire rack.
